Kate Pickett CPDT-KA is Keenly Canine’s Owner and Head Instructor. From her first family dogs as a child, to her current canine companions, Kate has befriended, trained, and competed with AKC-recognized breeds and loveable mixed-breeds alike. When Kate assisted a friend with her dog-training business, Kate knew she had found her calling and has been a devoted trainer ever since. Having studied dog training and behavior since 1997 and having taught basic obedience, AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program, and beginning and intermediate agility for other businesses and organizations, Kate officially launched Keenly Canine in 2009 in order to give clients the knowledge and skills to foster flourishing relationships with their dogs.
Kate continues to sharpen her own skills and insights by attending multiple seminars and telecourses each year taught by nationally and internationally known trainers. Some of the areas in which she has been trained include teaching pet dog classes, learning theory, clicker training, agility, freestyle, competitive obedience, herding, reactivity in dogs, predicting aggression in shelter dogs, defensive handling, and stress in the performance dog. Between the training she receives and the time she spends educating herself with training books and DVD’s, Kate is always honing her knowledge and keeping her “toolbox” stocked with ideas, methods, and activities to benefit her canine and human clients.
With a background in science (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology) Kate approaches training challenges with an analytical and observant eye while her experience as a pet owner gives her empathy and understanding for dogs and their owners.
