Puppy Kindergarten: Life Skills For Puppies
Requirements for attending class: A licensed veterinarian must examine your puppy at least once before coming to class. Your puppy can attend class 7 days after their first set of shots and deworming. Your puppy must stay current on their vaccination schedule throughout class. Do not bring your puppy to class if he or she is showing any signs of illness such as, but not limited to fever, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, runny nose or eyes.
Class description: This 6 week class for puppies 20 weeks and younger will cover an introduction to basic obedience skills (attention and focus, sit, down, stand, come, loose leash walking, leave it, drop it, go to your mat) along with other topics including socialization, housebreaking, crate training, appropriate vs. inappropriate chewing, bite inhibition, tolerating gentle restraint, and grooming. Each class will begin with an open discussion period to address any questions or problems that may have occurred during the previous week. As part of the class you will also receive the puppy training book “Puppy Primer” by Scidmore and McConnell Ph.D.
What to bring to class: Proof of vaccinations, a flat buckle collar or harness, a 4-6 foot leather or fabric leash (retractable leashes are not appropriate for training), lots of tiny soft treats that your puppy can eat in 1 gulp, 2-3 of your puppy’s favorite toys, a blanket or mat (crate pads or bath mats work well),a small water dish, and a copy of your receipt showing payment for the class.
